The procedure of Apostille:
India was admitted to the Hague Convention in 2005, which ended the requirement for the Legalization of public documents. For India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) performs both Apostille attestation and general certification of the paper. The process is as follows: the following:
Step 1: Documents must be authenticated
All original documents/certificates requiring MEA to issue Apostille must be first authenticated by the designated authorities of the State/Union Territory from where the document is issued. MEA only gives Indian Apostille if the relevant state authority has authenticated the particular paper. Step 2: Legalization of documents
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) authenticates or legalizes documents only after they have been authenticated using the seal or seal of the authorities designated by the State Government/Union Territories/Chambers of Commerce from which the documents were issued. The MEA legalizes the certificate/documents based on the signature of the designated authorities; hence it does not take responsibility for the contents of the documents.

Types of Documents and Charges:
While there is no fee imposed through the Ministry of External Affairs for General Attestation, The charge for service to PCC is the same for general attestation and Apostille.
Only original documents authenticated by the authorities designated by the State Governments concerned are certified through the Ministry of External Affairs. Apostille stickers are issued on the reverse of the document in its original form. The applicants are required to provide the following documents:
(a) Document to be original Apostilled;
(b) A uncolored photocopy
(c) A clear photocopy of the Passport
Documents can be dropped off at the “Collection & Delivery” counters between 0900 until 1800 hrs, Monday to Saturday, except holidays.
If, however, the documents are found to be fraudulent, or the authenticity is forged, it is seized by officials of the Ministry of External Affairs. The Ministry can also take action against the person who submitted it. The amount that we receive or the Apostille fee that the Ministry of External Affairs pays cannot be refunded under any circumstance.
